Matthews Rathabeng

February Athlete of the Month

Whilst some allow injuries to keep them down and out, Matty uses his injury time to get UP and around. Still setting his early morning alarms, this absolute champ is up at the crack of dawn weekend after weekend to support others. 🫂 Selfless in the extreme, he’s showing what the phrase “runners supporting runners” really means, and has quickly become a pillar in the community. He is the self proclaimed “cult high priest” after all.

He’s a phenomenal athlete too - and could easily have won this award for that in months gone by. 🏆 So here’s to hoping our friend hits the road running again soon - we’re always rooting for you. The comeback is always stronger than the setback. 🤲Crew hugs always Matty.

Q&A:

1. Your favourite race to date?

It has to be Two Oceans Ultra Marathon for me. This was my first ultra marathon with only one marathon to my name prior. Eeek I know!😬🤦🏾‍♂️ The route has everything from the fast flat section at the start, the chappies climbs where you can take in all the beautiful views 😍, that tempting, mega scrumptious🤤 down hill into Hout Bay and the negotiations that await up to Constantia Nek. Beautiful race, highly recommended!

2. What keeps you coming back to MLH?

As the “Cult High Priest” it’s only natural that I keep returning. Jokes aside, I appreciate that MLH is so well organized. Big ups to Mike and the Exco for this. But I also come back for the social side of it. I’ve met some amazing people in the crew who will likely be lifelong friends. Also, I hear MLH is better than most dating apps👀

3. How did your running journey start?

I started running consistently in 2018, purely as a way to stay fit. But as I did it more and joined running crews and communities, I fell in love with the sport. I also like to do hard things, and running is a great way to challenge myself continuously.
